Session description

The Alberta Health Services (AHS) Indigenous Patient Journey projects sought to explore what was working, what was not working and what was missing in Addiction and Mental Health (AMH) services delivered to Indigenous populations. To get an accurate picture of service-user experience the project collected quantitative and qualitative data from the service users themselves, capturing the voice of lived experience.

After over 100 interviews with predominantly homeless high needs service users with multiple episodes of care in addiction and mental health facilities, and 100 predominantly homeless high needs service users who were incarcerated, the project team identified extremely complex service needs including:

  • high levels of lifetime trauma exposure through childhood, teen and adult years
  • high levels of mental health distress with poor mental health literacy
  • repetitive cycles in addiction, treatment, and relapse
  • repetitive cycles of incarceration, release, and arrest

In this webinar, you will:

  • recognize gaps in service delivery that further propagate these cycles.
  • hear the service user narrative; testimonials that offer a raw depiction of the Indigenous service-user experience in Addiction and mental health.
