Project: Asymptomatic Bacteriuria: A look at how antimicrobials are discussed at SIBR

My project was looking at ways to reduce treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) at the Pasqua Hospital. Baseline data showed that this was the most frequently identified inappropriate use of antibiotics on our inpatient units and we began to look at use of our structured interdisciplinary bedside rounds (SIBR) as a tool to reduce the number of days for which patients received antibiotics for ASB. Our preliminary results were a process audit that have shown that rounds happen consistently and that all patients who were on antibiotics for a urinary tract infection had them addressed for assessment at SIBR.
