Project: Improving Access to Pediatric Organ Donation

Aim Statement: That the families of all potential pediatric organ donors have the option to consider organ donation at the end of life.

Background: Organ donation may be an option for families of children at the end of life. Not all eligible patients are referred to the organ donation program, which represents a missed donation opportunity. There is random variation in the identification and referral of potential donors in the PICU. Organ donation rates are low in Saskatchewan and improvement is a provincial priority.

Methodology: Key stakeholders identified driving factors for identification and referral of donors. This information was used to create a screening tool with the intention to standardize the identification and referral of all potential pediatric organ donors.

Results: The intervention has not yet been implemented.

Conclusion: This project has the potential to inform donation practices in other pediatric ICUs.
