Beyond Awareness: Measuring Progress in Cultural Safety and Cultural Humility

Session description

Many teams across systems recognize the importance of Cultural Safety and Cultural Humility but how do we know when there is meaningful integration in practice? This webinar will explore how innovative approaches to measurement can advance equity and address systemic anti-Indigenous racism. Drawing from some of the real-world examples of work in this area, we’ll discuss pathways for improving system measurement process, opportunities to co-design, Indigenous data sovereignty and how we can shift the role of measurement to be more relational, reflective, and rooted in community-defined values.

In this session, participants will learn to:

• Describe the limitations of existing measurement practices and how Indigenous-informed approaches to measurement can support equity and address anti-Indigenous racism in health care.
• Recognize the distinct features of Cultural Safety and Cultural Humility within measurement approaches.
• Identify practical ways to consider measurement aligned to principles of Indigenous data sovereignty.

Speaker

Mark Matthew, Indigenous Health and Patient & Public Engagement, Health Quality BC

Mark grew up on the reserve of the Simpcw First Nation near Barriere, BC. At Health Quality BC, Mark has supported efforts like the revision of the BC Health Quality Matrix, BCs Standard on Cultural Safety and Humility, and participated on an Indigenous Advisory Committee for Patient Centred Measurement and the Cultural Safety and Humility Complaints Collaborative.

Mark’s work has given him the opportunity to explore various opportunities for change across the health system and he remains motivated to pursue a career where he can be part of positive change in First Nations and Indigenous communities.
